What is an Esthetician?

Another word for esthetician is a skin care therapist. Estheticians are not medical doctors, however they can work close to them and help a doctor with a prescribed treatment and work alongside of a doctor to carry out the doctors care plan. Estheticians are well trained in the cosmetic treating of the skin and preform cosmetic procedures such as facials, body treatments, acne treatment, body wraps, facial massages, and waxing. They also perform a variety of specialty spa treatments. Other optionssĀ for estheticians are, a makeup artist, cosmetic brand representative, and a beauty consultant. Estheticians can work in plastic surgeon offices, dermatologist offices, medi-spas, hospitals, clinics and laser centers assisting medically trained professionals. The treatments that an esthetician can perform may include pre-and postoperative care, prepping the client for surgery or other medical services, camouflage makeup, microdermabrasion, patient education and retail sales. Estheticians cannot perform laser treatments, prescribe any medications, use lancets or do any kind of extractions, or give medical advice to clients.
