It is important for a massage therapist to specialize in one or more different types of massage to enhance his/her career. There are many different types of massage to choose from but here are a few that are popular:

- Deep Tissues Massage. Deep tissue massage is a type of massage that involves the use of slower strokes across the grain of the muscle. This type of massage is designed to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. People who have chronically tight or painful muscles, posture problems or repetitive strain will benefit most from this type of massage.

- Shiatsu. Shiatsu is a type of Japanese massage that involves the use of localized finger pressure in a rhythmic sequence. During a shiatsu massage, each point is held for two to eight seconds. It is said to improve the flow of energy and improve balance.

- Thai Massage. Thai massage is a type of massage that involves compression and stretches. The application of gentle pressure is applied to specific points of the body. It is said to align the body's energy, reduce stress and improve flexibility.
