The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in 2010 there were 153,700 massage therapy jobs. The BLS also predicted the field to increase 20% by 2020. This outlook might provide one of the reasons why massage therapy is becoming more popular as a career path.

Affinity for Alternative Medicine

Many massage therapists gravitate toward the field because they prefer the less invasive, natural healing methods employed in alternative medicine. By learning massage therapy, they can improve the health and quality of life in others while honoring their beliefs.

Expanding Market

The American Massage Therapy Association notes that growing interest in health and wellness has changed and increased the massage therapy field over the past several years. In some states, health insurance covers or offers discounts for massage therapy, making it a more accessible healthcare option for individuals. To fulfill the higher demand, more healthcare physicians like chiropractors, osteopaths, or even traditional medical doctors may have massage therapists working for their practices.

Working Conditions

While there are more employment opportunities available for massage therapists, in 2010, about 60% were self-employed. The field allows for a great deal of flexibility, such as the ability to work full-time or part-time. Roughly a quarter of practitioners in 2010 worked full-time. For those who need flexibility in their professions, massage therapy provides and attractive option.

Earning Potential

According to the U.S. News & World Report 2011 list of Best Healthcare Jobs, the mid-range annual salary for the massage therapy field fell between $24,810 and $50,710. However, since most therapists work part-time, a better earnings gauge might come from the American Massage Therapy Association. They estimate that in cities, massage therapists charge $60-$100 per hour, and in less populated areas, $50-$75.
