If you are a student preparing to become an esthetician or a massage therapist, you will encounter moments when you need to perform facials on clients. Your school will teach you how to do this, but here are the top six things you should be prepared to learn.

1. You must assess your client

Before you perform any type of facial, you need to consult with your client and check his or her skin type. Additionally, note any kind of skin conditions your client may have. For example, clients with rosacea will need to be handled differently than clients with clear skin.

2. Learn the product

There are many products that you can use for facials. However, not every product is ideal for a certain situation. Learn what the products do.

3. Explain the products

Before you conduct a facial, be prepared to answer the client when he or she asks you about the products you will be using. Certain products can cause itching or irritation.

4. Learn how the skin works

Before you can practice facials, you must understand the anatomy and physiology of the skin. It is the largest organ and plays a prominent role in how our body functions.

5. How to massage the skin

There are muscles and layers inside your skin. Certain massage techniques can stimulate and relax those muscles. This is probably the largest aspect that you will learn about facials.

6. How to search for products

Many massage therapists and estheticians work independently, so you will need to learn how to find new products for facials and skin care.

Be prepared to learn these top six things and other aspects of giving facials to clients. Your knowledge will help you during your training hours.
