In today's fast-paced, stressful society, massage therapy is quickly becoming a popular and very lucrative career choice. While there are many different massage techniques a person could learn in school, there are five main methods he or she can expect to learn in massage therapy school.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is a long, deep massage typically lasting 60 to 90 minutes. This technique promotes total relaxation by working out any knots or tension in a person's muscles.

Deep Tissue Massage

The techniques used in deep tissue massage are meant to work out the tension and pain associated with conditions affecting ligaments, tendons, and the deeper muscles of the body. The massage involves very slow, deep pressure on a person's problem areas.

Neuromuscular Massage

Neuromuscular massage concentrates a person's trigger points to relieve pain and tension in a specific area of the body. A trigger point is a concentrated of a muscle that is especially tight, causing a knot in the tissue and pain in the entire adjacent muscles. The techniques used in this particular massage helps to rid the muscle of that knot.

Injury Massage

The techniques used in injury massage concentrate on an injured area of the person's body. The motions are carefully executed, so as not to cause further injury. When properly done, the massage can help relax the area while promoting healing.

Myofascial Release Massage

Myofascial release massage concentrates on specific problem areas of the body that are thought to store stress and tension. By stretching these trouble areas, it is believed that relaxation and pain relief can be felt throughout the body.

Learning a variety of massage techniques in massage therapy school can help a potential therapist cater to the needs of a larger client base. While not an exhaustive list of techniques a student can expect to learn in school, these forms of massage are the most popular.
