Botox injections are becoming an increasingly popular way to smooth wrinkles without some of the invasive methods of plastic surgery. This method of freshening one's appearance is popular among Hollywood celebrities and is affordable of much of the general public. One of the primary benefits of botox is that it can be done on an outpatient basis as a spa treatment, without the patient having to undergo the risks of general anesthesia. For a person contemplating a facelift, botox may be a great way to make a change without the same risk or cost as major surgery. Botox can also be used to fill in areas, such as the lips or cheeks, for a more exotic, fuller look. The effects of botox do wear off after a few months, which is both an advantage and a disadvantage. The change is not permanent, which can be good if the patient dislikes the effects. However, to continue to enjoy the benefits of botox, the patient must have the procedure redone every several months, which can be costly.

One of the downsides of botox is that it causes the muscles in a person's face to be unable to constrict as well as they could before the injections. That is how botox smoothes lines in a person's face--by freezing the muscles in certain areas so that wrinkles do not show up with that person smiles or frowns. This can make a person seem less expressive, although many actors and actresses who rely on their ability to express emotions in cinema have opted for this procedure. Some researchers have even suggested that botox can affect the ability to empathize with others, because people naturally mimic the facial expression that another has when speaking to them, which helps the listener feel what the speaker is experiencing.
