The Therapeutic Benefits of Essential Oils

For thousands of years, essential oils have been prized for their therapeutic benefits. The parts of the brain involved in our sense of smell also process emotions and memories. Real estate agents know the power of aromatherapy. Many fill properties with scents of vanilla and cinnamon before a showing to evoke pleasant memories in potential clients. Meditation centers use oil blends to help create ideal conditions for contemplation.

Use in Spa Treatments

Massage therapists and skin specialists employ scented oils in spa treatments. Scents like lavender, sandalwood and clary sage aid in relaxation and meditation. Studies have shown the effectiveness of essential oils for treating skin conditions. In particular, tea tree oil exhibits strong antimicrobial properties which make it excellent to add to pedicure treatments. Spas often use products containing calming oils like chamomile to treat irritated skin.

Using Oils at Home

You can use a diffuser for aromatherapy at home. Diffusers heat water containing essential oils into a vapor that fills the air with the scent. You can create an endless variety of recipes with your diffuser, such as combinations for:

  • Stress- For a stress-busting aromatherapy session, simply add a few drops of ylang-ylang and lavender oil to the water in your diffuser.

  • Congestion- Use eucalyptus and peppermint oil to help clear clogged sinuses.

  • Insect Problems- You can place citronella, eucalyptus and lavender oil in your diffuser to repel insects.

Pure oils need to be mixed with a carrier oil before applying them to the skin. Direct application can provoke allergic reactions or even burn the skin. Coconut and olive oil are among the most popular carrier oils.

Experiment with recipes at home, or visit your local essential oil business to find a premixed blend that will suit your particular needs.
