Being an esthetician means you are taking care of your clients and providing them with the skin care they need. As a skin care specialist, you will work with hundreds of different clients and recommend many different facial treatments and makeup. This career choice is a great one and if you have a love for helping people, you will go far. Many estheticians show up in the field but not everyone always stays. This is typically due to a lack of the one skill needed to be successful, knowledge.

Knowledge in the skin care industry is very important and coupled with it should come understanding as well. Your clients come to you because they have a problem and they want help. As their skin care specialist, you need to be able to give them guidance and the proper recommendations. Being knowledgeable means knowing what to recommend and helping your clients.

Anyone can say, “Use X moisturizer on your face for soft skin”. However, this does not work if your client has sensitive skin. If you want your clients to come back to you, you need to show them that you deserve their business.

A successful esthetician will not only simply recommend things, but will consult their clients and show them how to use and replicate the products and techniques. You should always know how to operate your machinery and equipment in case you need to use it.

In addition to knowledge, a successful esthetician must have understanding. Your clients are already probably self-conscious about their skin and you should remember this. Use professional and proper words to describe their skin and never say hurtful or negative things. Guide your clients and provide them with understanding and nurturing.

If you make sure to have this one skill above all else, you will go far as a skin care specialist. There are many opportunities in the field and you will definitely love what you do.
