The Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

While there are several styles of massage therapy, deep tissue massage is commonly applied to aid in everything from relaxation to headaches, chronic pain to fibromyalgia, injuries to tennis elbows and anything in between, and is often misunderstood and overlooked. Deep tissue massage, when performed with proper technique, can increase blood flow, relieve sore muscles and even reduce illness occurrences.

By offering this specialty in your massage therapy clinic you can help your clients not only to feel better, but help them to prevent future muscle injuries due to working out or even just moving incorrectly in daily life. Some may find this style of massage therapy slightly uncomfortable if their muscles are unusually tense. This might also lead to complaint of tenderness the day after the deep tissue massage, this is common and can generally be relived with ice. Once these side effects wear off, the client will begin to feel immediate relief.

Some suggestions you can provide to your clients are: stretch muscles prior to and after their deep tissue massage to reduce soreness. Avoid large meals an hour or so before their scheduled appointment, they may be laying on their stomach for a prolonged time. Drink lots of fluids after their massage, this will help flush toxins from their system. If possible, ask that they arrive to your clinic a few minutes early and turn off all electronic devices. This will allow them time to unwind from the outside world and let their muscles begin to relax for a deeper massage. Make sure to confirm that a client is not pregnant and has not recently had any surgeries prior to performing any massages.

It is always most beneficial to your clients, and therefore to your practice, if you offer a wide variety of massage therapy techniques, deep tissue massage is always a top skill to offer!
