When first becoming a massage therapist, many people envision themselves working within the tranquil environment of a spa; however, there is another great career option for anyone who has a sense of adventure. Working as a massage therapist on a cruise line is one way to take your career to a whole new level while enjoying the advantages that come with working while away at sea. Cruise lines often seek licensed massage therapists who are open to enjoying the benefits offered by this rewarding career.

Cruise Line Requirements

To be eligible to work as a massage therapist on a cruise line, most employers will require for you to be a licensed therapist. Additionally, many recruiters will have preferences for individuals who specialize in specific massage types such as Swedish or deep-tissue. Once hired, most cruise lines will require for you to undergo a physical and get any required immunizations for traveling overseas. Due the nature of this position, they may also conduct a background check.

Work and Living Conditions

Crew members on a cruise will often live in an area that is designated for crew members. Generally, massage therapists will work several hours a day in a spa environment while providing massages to clients. The compensation for massage therapists will vary according to the cruise line’s guidelines; however, massage therapists can expect to earn an income that is based upon an hourly salary, commissions and tips.

Additional Perks and Benefits

In addition to the potential to earn a high-level of income, massage therapists enjoy living and working within the relaxed atmosphere of a cruise ship. During their off hours, massage therapists are given full-range of the ship to enjoy activities such as swimming, dancing and touring new and exciting destinations. After they have completed their contract, most massage therapists are excited to sign up for another tour where they can continue to enjoy a career that offers both financial stability and adventure.
