Surprising Uses for Epsom Salt

Epsom salt has been used over centuries to solve a variety health of issues. Epsom salt is a naturally occurring mineral compound (magnesium and sulfate) that is readily absorbed through your skin. Epsom salt is a natural, inexpensive compound with many surprising uses, from increasing the benefits of massage therapy to softening your skin.

Promotes Health and Wellness

Epsom salt has many uses to promote health and wellness. When you are stressed, your system is depleted of magnesium as your adrenaline levels increase. Magnesium plays many roles throughout your system, including the regulation of more than 325 enzymes. The magnesium in Epsom salt also promotes the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) that boosts energy and stamina. The sulfates help your body absorb nutrients and flush toxins.

Relieves Sore Muscles

An Epsom salt bath reduces pain and inflammation. This makes Epsom salt beneficial in the treatment of sore muscles and joint pain. Epsom salt soaks are often recommended after massage therapy because the magnesium regulates your electrolyte balance needed for the proper function of muscles and nerves. Epsom salt can be mixed with your body cream for topical application to sore muscles and painful joints.

Effective Skin Care

Rubbing Epsom salt over damp skin will exfoliate your skin by removing dead skin cells. This is particularly useful to exfoliate rough hands, feet, and elbows but can be used from head to toe for all- over skin care. You can also add a teaspoon of Epsom salt to your cleansing cream to transform your cream into a deep pore cleanser.

Epsom salt can also be used to relieve the itching of poison ivy and insect bites and help eczema heal faster. For maximum health benefits, it is recommended to add 2 cups of Epsom salt to your bath and soak for a minimum of 12 minutes, three times a week.
