Staying Hydrated for Health and Wellness

Why is drinking water so important?

It seems that drinking water has recently become a trend. Lemon water, water, and apple cider vinegar, and expensive water bottles are all part of the health and wellness movement. It's all for good reason though. No drink can replace pure, freshwater, and chronic dehydration can cause health problems much more serious than thirst.

Drinking plenty of water is the first step to good skincare. Many people who suffer from skin concerns, such as acne, find that drinking at least 64 ounces of water per day can actually greatly improve their problem areas. Water can help flush out toxins in the body while also keeping the skin hydrated and supple, which will give anyone a fresh, glowy complexion.

Proper hydration can also help reduce water retention. It may sound counterintuitive, but when people are dehydrated, or they consume too many sugary drinks, the body holds on to any bit of water it can get. Water retention often gives people a bloated look or feel, and as soon as they begin drinking eight cups of plain water per day, their body releases that extra moisture and begin to feel much better.

The benefits of drinking water are infinite, but drinking too little water can actually be quite harmful to long term health. A lack of water in the short-term may lead to headaches, dizziness, nausea, and constipation. Chronic dehydration has been linked to serious problems like urinary tract infections, decreased kidney function, and high blood pressure.

So, to avoid all of these unpleasant side effects, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! The path to healthy living starts with one of the most basic human needs. Put down that can of soda and drink a glass of water. Your skin, body, and brain will thank you.
