Being a massage therapist can be a fulfilling career that brings great personal reward. You’re able to use your skilled hands to bring comfort and healing to your clients. However, there’s also a responsibility that comes with your career because you need to be concerned about sanitation and equipment maintenance. Keeping a checklist for yourself can be extremely helpful so that you don’t forget any steps in your cleaning routine. Here are some helpful steps.

Massage Table

Your table must be thoroughly disinfected with an EPA-registered disinfectant between EVERY client. This registered disinfectant must be proven effective against HIV-1, Hepatitis B or is a Tuberculocidal. Wipe your table down with this from top to bottom, in every hinge, fold and crevice.

Sheets and Linens

These must be kept spotless at all times. Store them in a disinfected cabinet or sealed container to keep them pristine and free of dust. They should be white to convey a feeling of safety and hygiene to your clients, so let them see you remove them, fresh just for them. To keep them stain-free, in addition to a quality detergent, wash them with a non-damaging bleach and a ¼ cup of disinfectant in hot water and dry them set on high heat. Remove them immediately, fold them squarely and then put them away.

Implements

These need to be sanitized by soaking in the same EPA-registered disinfectant. Before removing them, wash your hands with an antibacterial soap. Let them completely air-dry on a sanitized towel before storing them. Store all of these in a clean, sealed and disinfected container.

Room

You need to wipe down the room as well, between every client. All surfaces should be wiped down, including the door, the door knob and all handles. The same EPA-registered disinfectant must be used for everything that you wipe down, and paper towels should be used so they can be disposed of.

Remember how important it is to your career as a massage therapist and to your clients that you practice unfaltering hygiene with your equipment and implements. It’s not only a matter of health and safety for them, but also a matter of a stellar reputation for you. Practice an effective decontamination routine, and you’ll have little to worry about. You can enjoy the time you have giving comfort and healing to your clients for a long time to come.
