Preparing a New Client for Their Massage: Introductory Massage Session
Posted on: June 4, 2014
Massage is a great way to relieve stress and relax the body. Many people seek out massage because it provides them with a relaxing experience and relieves them of their pain. It is important for you, as a massage therapist to let your first time clients know what to expect. Someone who has never had a massage before may be nervous and many not really know what they can expect. Explaining it to them and telling them what will happen is a good way to set the stage for them.
Getting Your Client Ready
One of the best things you can do is organize an information packet for your new clients. You can hand this out to them when they come in for their first appointment. The information packet should include things such as a welcome letter, brochures about the different types of massages offered, and a client form. The client form is one of the most important things. Your client should fill this out and it should ask them what they are looking for, how much pressure they want you to use, it should address their health and concerns, etc. Before a massage starts, you should sit down with your new client and explain to them what happens during their massage. Go over the basics with them and let them know what they need to do to prepare. You should discuss what their expectations are before you begin the massage. This will give you an understanding of what they are looking for and you can also clear up any unrealistic expectations at that time as well. Many clients are confused about the disrobing process and it leaves them feeling uneasy. You should explain the situation to them and let them choose how comfortable they are.
Keeping Up with New Clients
New clients are a wonderful thing and it is in your practice’s best interest to explain things to them. This will help them feel comfortable and they will not be worried throughout the massage. It can be difficult for a new client to walk in for a massage and just feel completely relaxed. As a massage therapist, it is your job to explain everything to them and properly prepare them for their day.
