As an esthetician, you will work in the greater field of cosmetology to help your clients feel better about their appearance. You may see people of all ages and walks of life. Some will be delightful and others....not so much. This is why it is good to know the personality traits of an esthetician who is successful so you can begin to cultivate those traits right at the beginning.

Compassion

As an esthetician you are really more like a kind of healer. Your clients may tell you about their skin issues and other problems. Showing compassion and empathy for each person will be just as healing as the work that you do in their skin.

Good listening skills

For some of your clients, the time they spend with you may be the only time they get each week to talk freely. So other than information you need to convey to do your job, you will need to cultivate excellent listening skills so they feel heard.

Open-mindedness

Some clients may have skin or other issues you've never seen before. Some may be unsettling. You will need to develop open-mindedness to find the best treatment solution.

Patience

Part of being in the service business is dealing with challenging people and situations, such as a client who is always late. Developing patience will help keep your own stress level down.

Responsiveness

Your clients may have special requests or want you to try a new technique they've just heard about. Staying responsive and interested in learning can also help you learn new tools to add to your esthetician toolkit. As you continue to learn and grow in your profession, each of these traits will stand you in good stead to enjoy your job and do the best job possible.
