Working as a medical massage therapist can be a rewarding experience. Massage therapists use their hands and arms to treat clients by manipulating the body’s muscles, often on the back. Massage therapy is known to promote relaxation and stress reduction. The personal requirements to become a medical massage therapist vary from state to state, most states have very similar standards.

Typically, massage therapists are required to participate in at least 500 hours of study and training experience. Students are required to take courses in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, business ethics and clinical practice. Students are also allowed to take courses in specialty massage styles. In any case, most states require massage therapists to pass an exam and achieve state licensure before practicing.

In addition to education and hands-on training, massage therapists should have some more personal requirements as well. They should have strong communication skills and the ability to empathize with clients. They must also have the physical stamina and strength to perform massages.
