Many women have a passion for acrylic nails, preferring the glossy finish and high durability over their naturally growing nails. Despite the higher cost of these nail enhancements, they opt for acrylics to get their desired look. Acrylic powders come in a rainbow of colors and can be used to make contour effects that dazzle the eye, as well as the traditional and very popular French manicure.

Acrylic nails can do a lot of damage to the natural nail underneath. When they are removed, the glue must be stripped off with pure acetone and filed off, which weakens the nails and makes them brittle. Some other nail enhancements, like a UV gel nail, for example, can be soaked off without filing, which is easier on the natural nails underneath, but this type of enhancement is more costly.

On the runway, natural nails are a definite trend for spring. Designers like Chanel and Dolce and Gabbana have both featured sheer white polish over healthy, natural nails as a complement to their colorful designs for spring 2013. Other hot trends for spring are the two-toned manicure, or to accent a plain manicure with flashes of a metallic polish.

Natural nails offer the opportunity to change polish as frequently as one would like to get the right look. Healthy nails that are kept neatly trimmed and polished are in.
