Massage Therapy for Neck Pain
Many clients who receive massage therapy treatment struggle with chronic neck pain that has the potential to alter their daily lives. Clients are desperate for relief and look to a licensed massage therapist to fix their pain. As a massage therapy student it is important to remember that the neck requires a gentle, yet confident touch. It is important to be cautious when working within this area, but still, make sure that you display a high level of confidence to ease client concerns. When the client is in your massage therapy chair, they are putting full trust in your work, so be understanding of their pain and trust your own skills.
There are several self-help movements for neck pain that are beneficial to share with your clients. Our first recommendation for this is to adjust the daily posture and make not of any bad posture habits. Make an emphasis on the position of the head. Staring at the ground can worsen neck pain, so make sure the client knows the importance of keeping the head level and in a neutral position that allows the back and shoulders to be naturally pulled back. Another exercise to recommend is sitting or standing neck retraction. Have the client place their fingers on their chin and gently push back to retract the neck. This allows for a stretch on the back of the neck and eventually allows for further retraction.
Massage therapy is one of the best solutions for chronic neck pain. This common issue requires a gentle hand and trust of the client. With the right pressure and skill, as well as suggested self-help movements for neck pain, your client should feel relief in no time.
