Most Common Nail Problems

When you want to care for your nails, understanding the most common nail problems that manicurists often encounter will help you to ensure your nails stay as healthy as possible before you make your next appointment.White Spots
When you have white spots on your nails, this can be considered Leuconychia, and is often caused by an injury that has happened recently to your fingers or toes, not due to a vitamin or calcium deficiency as previously thought. As new cells generate and your injury begins to heal, the white spots underneath your nails will fade as well.
Fungus
Nail fungus is a common problem that can cause fingers to appear yellow and even greenish if the fungus has progressively developed. Treating fungus is often done by visiting a general physician or by working together with a dermatologist who can provide the proper ointments and medication.
Hangnails
Hangnails are easy to cut and trim but can cause your nails to feel extremely sharp. In some cases, hangnails may also tear too low, exposing the nerve of the finger or toe, so it is important to cut hangnails extremely carefully while properly filing them.
Cracked Skin
Although cracked skin is not directly on the nail, it can surround the nail causing pain if you are having your nails worked on or even painted by a professional manicurist.
Ingrown Nails
One of the most common nail problems today is still ingrown nails. Ingrown nails can be extremely painful and can often lead to an infection or the inability to use one's fingers or toes without feeling extremely uncomfortable or in pain. Ingrown nails can be treated by soaking the fingers or toes in hot water and using specialized tools to help with essentially digging the nail out from within the bed of skin it has grown into.
