Lip Care Tips for the Summer Sun

Tips for Soft Summer Lips

Dry lips are hard to ignore, especially in the summer months. There’s something about being in the summer sun that wreaks havoc on our mouths. This is because our lips produce fewer melanocytes, which are the cells responsible for creating melanin. Therefore, it’s important to have a regular lip care routine to keep them hydrated and healthy.

Summer Lip Care Tips

When it’s hot out, it’s easier for your lip skin to dry out. So, it’s important to always keep a lip balm with you and apply it at the first sign of dryness. Oftentimes, forgetting or losing your lip balm forces you to either leave them dry or constantly lick them. Since your lips naturally lack a protective barrier, your saliva creates more dryness. If you can, find a balm with an SPF of 30 while spending time in the sun.

Not only should you carry lip balm, but you also need to drink water. Drinking water nourishes your body from the inside out. Lip dryness is one of the first signs of dehydration, so be sure to carry a water bottle in hot temperatures.

When your lip skin is dry, it's also important to exfoliate. Exfoliating removes the flaky, dead skin cells, which are then replaced with a healthy layer of skin. To exfoliate your skin, mix a small amount of sugar and carrier oil. Popular carrier oils include coconut, olive, and jojoba oil. The sugar will buff your skin while the oil helps replace lost moisture. After rubbing your exfoliating paste, wipe using a cloth with warm water. Follow up with your preferred moisturizer.

You deserve beautiful lip skin all year round. Whether you spend time indoors or soaking up the sun, be sure to stay hydrated, exfoliate, and keep your mouth moisturized.
