Whether you're a professional nail technician or you practice your own nail care at home, keeping the tools of the trade clean is critical to avoiding health issues like infection and fungus. Follow this advice to keep the nail tools you use clean. If you prefer to get a manicure at a salon, make sure that they are practicing these hygiene steps.

For Metal Nail Supplies

If your tools are metal, soak them in warm, soapy water for two to three minutes before using on your nails. Dry thoroughly, then completely cleanse with rubbing alcohol.

For Wooden Nail Supplies and Files

These tools are meant to be disposable and should never be reused. If you are on a budget, try cutting them into smaller pieces so that you don't have to buy a new set every time you do your nails. If you work in a professional salon, you should have at least three sets of metal implements to use for your clients. Immediately after finishing with a client, wash the tools completely with warm soapy water. Wipe down with rubbing alcohol, then soak in disinfectant for at least an hour. By the time you've had three clients, the first set of tools will be all set to use safely. At the end of the day, use an autoclave if your salon has one. This tool uses heat to kill germs on your tools. Put clean and disinfected tools in individual plastic bags so they will be ready for your next set of clients. Also practice good hygiene by washing your hands before and after a manicure. In between manicures, keep your supplies in a clean place, like wrapped in plastic inside a clean drawer.
