The Basics of Skin Care
A daily skin care routine is as much a part of healthy living as adequate hydration and balanced eating. If you're unsure of how to start a daily skin care regimen, consider these basic skin cleansing steps.
1. Cleansing
After removing your makeup, wash your face with a facial cleanser and warm water. Choose a cleanser that meets your skin's needs. Is it oily, dry or combination? Knowing your skin type helps you choose the best products for you. Remember to use warm water—it can dry the skin. Gently pat dry your face.
2. Toning
Soak a cotton pad with toner and swipe it gently over your face. If you have oily or combination skin, be sure to swipe over your T-zone.
3. Nourishing
A serum is a great way to nourish your skin. Do you suffer from hyperpigmentation? Use a serum with vitamin C as the active ingredient. For wrinkles and fine lines, you should choose a serum with alpha hydroxy acids.
4. Moisturizing
Moisturizing helps replenish the skin's much-needed moisture, which diminishes over time. Again, choose a moisturizer based upon your individual skin. People with oily skin need lighter moisturizers.
5. Moisturizing the Eye Area
The eye area usually requires its own moisturizer, unless you have oily skin. If your skin is dry or combination, the delicate tissue under your eyes will benefit from the extra moisture found in eye creams.
How an Esthetician Can Help
If you're unsure of your skin type or its needs, consider seeing an esthetician. An esthetician is a skin care specialist that works in a day spa or salon. He or she can help you identify your skin type and recommend helpful products or skin care tips.
