According the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, projected employment for massage therapists is expected to grow 23 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than than many other jobs. Another benefit to working as a massage therapist is the flexibility of work hours and possible work settings. Some massage therapists work as independent practitioners, while others find work in spas or health care clinics. For a person who is just beginning a massage therapy career, there are many opportunities to find the kind of work setting that best suits your interests, skills, and career goals. One of the barriers to a successful massage career is the time needed for proper training and certification. Most massage training programs require a minimum of 500 hours of study and hands-on practice. Depending on location, a certificate or license will be needed in order to begin work as a massage therapist. However, many schools offer part-time or evening courses, so it is possible to continue working in one's current job while training for a new career. It may also be possible to intern with a clinic, which can also help in developing a base of new clients. While the time needed for training may be a barrier for some, a successful massage therapist will be able to make this barrier into a springboard to launch their new career
