How to Wake Up a Sleeping Massage Client

Is it Acceptable to Fall Asleep During a Massage?

If you've ever received a professional quality massage, then you know firsthand that they can cause you to fall asleep, especially if you are already quite tired. As any massage therapist will tell you, it is completely acceptable to fall asleep during a massage session. In fact, it is a very healthy and normal reaction to an extremely relaxing stimulus. If you do fall asleep, however, it is up to the massage therapist to gently wake you up by using a variety of specialized techniques.

In the article below we'll walk you through some of the most commonly used techniques that professional and licensed massage therapists use to gently awaken a sleeping massage client.

The Top 3 Techniques Used to Awaken a Sleeping Massage Client

Nudging the Shoulder - One of the most common ways that a licensed massage therapist will wake up a sleeping client is by gently nudging the client's shoulder. By placing a warm hand on to the person's shoulder and gently nudging it several times, you should be able to get your client to awaken without startling them.

A Soft-Spoken Verbal Gesture - Another very common way that day spa or massage therapy specialists awaken their sleeping client is by using a very soft spoken verbal gesture, for example, by telling the client that the massage session has ended. It is recommended to lean towards the client's head when verbalizing a wake-up call, however, be sure to speak softly so that the client isn't startled.

The Use of Pressure Points - There are pressure points at the bottom of the feet between the foot's bridge and sole that if pressed can awaken a sleeping massage client in a gentle way. When pressed, the nerve in this area of the foot triggers a very light and stimulating sensation that will help you peacefully awaken the client. This technique is often used in professional spa treatment sessions.
