As a massage therapist, one of your ultimate goals may be to work in professional sports. While it is a goal to strive for, there are not many spots. Usually a professional sports team will have one or two therapist positions. If you want to reach the highest goal in massage therapy and work for a professional sports team, there are a few factors to consider.

The first factor to consider when you want to work in pro sports as a massage therapist is to understand the type of educational background you will need. Professional sports teams want to hire the best, so if you want to apply for the job, you should hold a degree in physical or muscle therapy. However, your degree and certifications to practice are just the first step. You must also get experience in the field. The first few jobs right out of school may not have you working with athletes, but will give you valuable experience in your career. While you are working, you can also look into advancing your skills with other types of certifications.

When you are ready to take the next step in your career by joining an athletic team, you will need to know who's who on the team. This may mean that you have previously worked with individual athletes at a health club, or maybe you know the team's trainer. Either way, knowing someone and giving them an opportunity to understand your skills is one of the best ways to get hired by a sports team.
