Massage therapy is a great way to soothe all the aches and pains of a busy life. But how do you choose a masseuse? What qualities should you be looking for while scouring spas, salons and health clinics? Here are just a few tips for finding a good massage therapist.

1: Identify Your Needs

Why are you looking for a massage therapist in the first place? Different practitioners will have different skills, so you'll need to find someone compatible with your desires. For example, if you're hoping for pain relief after a sports injury, someone with a medical background will be able to help you more than just an aromatherapy specialist.

2: Check Their Credentials

Are they affiliated with the Associated Bodywork Massage Professionals (ABMP) or the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA)? Did they train at a real massage school, and if so, how long ago? Do they have any kind of license for cosmetician or alternative health care services?

3: Choose Locally

For optimal results, massage therapy should be a regular part of your routine. Don't fall in love with a masseuse who practices fifty miles away. You'll want someone close to home so you won't be able to put off your sessions with the excuse of work, school or other commitments.

4: Find Someone Who Makes You Comfortable

More than price or even qualifications, it's important that you find a massage therapist who puts you at ease every time you walk through the door. This may mean choosing a masseuse of the same gender or finding one who shares your belief in homeopathic remedies. There's no "wrong" criteria when it comes to personal comfort, so don't be afraid to be choosy. These are just four ways to find a good massage therapist. Make sure you can trust them before you put yourself under their hands!
