History of Massage

Massage has been around for thousands of years. Here is a brief outline of the history of massage:3000 BC- Chinese wrote Cong-Fu of the Toa-Tse. It is the oldest known book written about massage.
2760 BC- Nei Ching describes therapeutic touch .
2500 BC – Egyptians created reflexology.
776 BC- At the Olympic Games athletes are massaged prior to their events.
100-44 BC- In Rome, Julius Caesar used Massage therapy to relieve his neuralgia and epileptic seizures.
100’s AD – First schools of massage were developed in china
600’s – Japanese developed shiatsu (finger pressure or acupressure).
1517-1590- Ambroise Pare, a French barber surgeon, raised awareness of the use of massage.
1564-1626- Lord Francis Bacon observed that massage had benefits enhancing circulation.
1839-1909 - In Holland, Johann Mezger brought medical massage to scientific community.
1850s- Scientific massage therapy was introduced in the United States by two New York physicians, brothers George and Charles Taylor, who had studied in Sweden.
1927 - New York State Society of Medical Massage Therapists was formed. It was the first massage association.
1930’s - Hospitals become staffed Physical Therapists who were doing massage.
