Healthy Scents for the Holidays

In the past, you may have been used to burning cinnamon-scented candles or plugging in a pine-scented air freshener. Fortunately, there are so many wonderful and natural scents that you can create using herbs, spices, fruits, and essential oils! The process is affordable, enjoyable, and simple. You can blend and diffuse essential oils, or add fresh herbs and spices to a simmering pot. Both of these provide pleasant and relaxing fragrances that leave your house smelling like the holiday season.

Here are some ideas of what to simmer in your pot of water:

  • Citrus rinds or slices

  • Cinnamon sticks

  • Vanilla extract

  • Whole cloves

  • Apple peels

  • Rosemary sprigs

Mix and match these to create your desired holiday scent! Simmering apple peels, vanilla extract, and cinnamon sticks will make you dream of apple pie. Drop some cloves into a pot filled with water, along with orange peels and sprigs of rosemary. Bring the water to a boil before turning the heat down to medium-low. Let the herbs and spices simmer for as long as you would like, making sure to check the water level and refill the pot often.

Use these ideas to create beautiful and fragrant gifts for your dear friends and family. Consider adding essential oils to small, amber glass bottles. Mix orange, rosemary, and cinnamon bark oil in the glass bottles for a spicy holiday scent. Include directions for your friends so they know how to use or diffuse them. You can also create little Mason jar gifts using cinnamon bark, sprigs of rosemary, and citrus rinds. Add these to the jars and tie them with a gorgeous red ribbon! Give your family directions to add the jar's contents to a simmering pot on the stove. Now you and your loved ones can enjoy pleasant and relaxing fragrances in your homes during this magical holiday season!
