You may have completed a license or certificate for massage therapy, but your knowledge on the subject doesn't just stop there. As a successful massage therapist, it's up to you to keep updated on the newest techniques and tools in the industry. Think you got it down? Your experience and continuing education are keys to keep your practice thriving. With your certification, hundreds of hours of training are behind you. Starting or joining a practice only bolsters your skills as each client walks in. You'll begin to see all the different parameters each client challenges you with, from athletes requiring tension relaxation to elderly patients looking for pain relief. Treat each massage patient uniquely to hone your skills. The more experience you gain, the better you'll service everyone and build word-of-mouth. Attend those yearly therapist conventions. Networking is a critical element to the massage, pedicure and manicure industries. Learn how all these industries intertwine to increase your patient satisfaction level. New tools could be emerging too, making it crucial for you to use these innovations immediately to stay competitive with other therapists. Networking even occurs during continuing education classes. Make it a point to increase your knowledge with at least one class a year. Although you may be extremely busy, you cannot better your skills or practice without exercising the mind. Brush up on skills you haven't used lately or cultivate an alternative therapy introduced to the field. With so many modalities to choose from, select to specialize in just a few top choices or become well-rounded with skills across the board. Massage therapy is an art and science so keeping yourself abreast of all new techniques only makes you better as a caregiver. Your patients notice the difference and offer references in response. Your reputation must carry you through the years.
