As a massage therapist, you will have a variety of clients that fit into a wide range of ages and personalities. Out of all of your clients, some of the ones that are the most enjoyable to work with will be young children who can benefit from your services. Children may come to a massage therapy practice for a variety of reasons such as to recover from a painful injury or to help them manage stress and relax. However, understanding how to work with these children is the key to creating an effective session that will be sure to leave them feeling comfortable and relaxed. Here, are the top tips for working with children to assist you in getting to know your smallest massage therapy clients.

Invite them to Talk

During a massage, some adults will prefer to stay silent as they enjoy the powerful sensations that touch can provide; however, children often find it difficult to stay quiet. Invite children to talk about their day and tell you more about themselves. Additionally, be sure to let your child clients know that they can provide feedback about if a particular part of their massage is uncomfortable. This way, you can easily adjust your techniques to ensure they enjoy the experience.

Show Them Around the Room

A child client may be curious about the tools and furniture that you have in your massage therapy room. Be sure to spend some time explaining the importance of your massage surface. If you use scented oils or lotions, then you may also allow a child to smell them and select one providing they do not have any allergies. For active children, you may find that spending a minute or two exploring the room can help them settle down before the massage.

Offer a Warm-Up Session

Children are often apprehensive about being touched by a stranger. By offering a warm-up session in which you meet with the child and their parents, you can help to eliminate any anxieties. During the warm-up, speak to both the parent and child at the same time while asking simple questions that the child can answer. Then, the child will be comfortable for their massage at the next session.
