Many new or aspiring massage therapists may think that the field is all about becoming proficient in massage, but a veteran knows is that communications skills are almost as important as technique when it comes to being a successful massage therapist.

A quality, relaxing massage would be impossible if a client did not feel safe with their therapist or surroundings. Establishing a safe environment for a prospective client begins at the first contact, whether it is in person or over the phone. By exhibiting professionalism in the initial conversation, listening thoroughly and gently addressing any concerns expressed, as well as outlining a plan that fits the client’s needs, the stage is set for a prospective customer to receive a more relaxing massage and to feel comfortable returning for more treatment.

Another essential communication skill is the comprehension of a client’s needs during a massage. A therapist needs to read verbal and non-verbal cues constantly throughout the session and respond appropriately. For instance, a client may tense up at a certain time; this may be a good time to verbally check-in with the client.

One last tool is choosing solution-based language rather than pointing out negative issues. For example, instead of saying “You are so tense”, say, “I’m so glad you came in for your session today so that we can get you more relaxed.” Notice the word tense was never used nor was it even implied in the latter example; the focus is kept on relaxation which helps to create more relaxation.

Massage therapists work with words almost as much as their hands when interacting with clients. Developing excellent communications skills is vital to working with people and can make the difference between a decent massage business and a highly successful massage business.
