Can your gender affect your career if you are a massage therapist?  Stereotypically, male therapists tend to perform physical therapy and sports massages, while women tend to work in a spa.

When it comes to working in a spa, most massage therapists are women.  When people are going to a spa to get a massage, they are generally setting aside time to take care of themselves.  When it comes to taking care of others, women are usually the ones who come to mind.  When a massage therapist is seen as a care giver, many will opt for a women over a man.  Many women who go into a spa are looking for a female massage therapist.  Some women feel that when a man is massage her that he might become inappropriate or be thinking of inappropriate things.

When it comes to performing physical therapy or sports massage, many people will seek out a male massage therapist.  People tend to categorize physical injury and sports as male and will turn to a male to work with them in these areas.  Although some stereotypes are still present, massage therapists are becoming more balanced.  More males are working in spas and more females are performing sports and physical therapy massage.
