Dealing with Migraines While Performing Massage
Posted on: July 3, 2013
As a massage therapist, you help to ease the pain of others, allowing them to have a better quality of life. If you are a victim of migraines, you are sure to dread any attacks, whether they are short or long in duration. The last thing you need is for a migraine to strike when you are in the middle of a massage session or have appointments to keep. Performing massage is your livelihood and gives you great pleasure. You don't want to cancel sessions because you are dealing with migraines and all of the other health issues that come with it. The best thing that you can do is prepare yourself for the possible onset of a migraine and learn coping skills. There are several things that you can do to set up the best possible environment for your massage therapy sessions. If this doesn't hold migraines at bay, you may find it easier to deal with one in the event that you are hit with a terrible headache at work. Choose dim lighting that can be adjusted for your treatment room. Soothing music and a cool atmosphere may be helpful as well. Light, noise and heat often aggravate a migraine attack.
Make sure that you remain hydrated and avoid foods that may trigger a migraine. If you are a woman, recognize the fact that migraines often occur at certain points in your menstrual cycle. Always be prepared with pain relievers. Have pain medication on hand at work so that you can treat your migraine immediately when it strikes. If you have early warning signs before a full-blown attack, take preventative measures. You can also apply a warm compress to your head. If other massage therapists are available, get a massage when you have a break for potential relief.
