Compassion is Key

Any profession that deals with people in anguish needs to have compassion for the client or patient. Massage therapists need to understand that the bed side manner that accompanies the massage will leave a lasting impression on the client. It is important to empathize as much as possible with the client. The client has come to you for a great massage and to feel better about their overall physical and mental health. A lack of compassion for the client will result in fewer clients and fewer referrals in the future. It does not take much effort to be compassionate for a client. You simply need to listen to what they have to say and respond accordingly. Offer advice only when necessary and refuse to say or do anything that would be considered inappropriate. If you have a client that is constantly complaining, simply offer the most relaxing environment that you can for the client. Focus your energy on the massage, and you will find that you have made the client feel better and more relaxed. Massage therapists have the unique ability to make tired and sore muscles feel better. Many clients need this therapy to survive until the next appointment. Massage therapists must listen to the needs of the client, and then do whatever possible to support the client's wishes.
As the needs for massage therapy become more understood, this occupation will likely continue to grow in the future. This means that there will be fierce competition to get and maintain clients. A great bed side manner will help anyone to improve the practice and receive more clients. Massage therapists do get a lot of their clients based upon patient referrals, so simply treat every client with the compassion and care that they need to be as productive as possible.
