Calming Nerves Before Massaging Your Client
Posted on: August 5, 2013
If you are a new massage therapist, you may find yourself nervous before your first solo massage session with a client. Those of you who have been massaging for years may still get anxious before working with a new client, especially if you're used to a schedule full of regulars. Don't be nervous! Here are some time-tested strategies for shaking off your anxiety so you can relax and help your customers to relax as well.Focus on Your Feelings
Before you enter the room for that first massage session, close your eyes for a moment and concentrate on how you feel. Is your stomach in knots? Do your hands feel shaky or sweaty? Take a few seconds to acknowledge these feelings and then release them with a deep breath. Sometimes this is all it takes to calm your nerves and shake off any negative emotions.
Smile and Be Grateful
You probably chose this career because you wanted to help others to relax and be free from pain. Smile! You have been chosen by this particular customer to help them. Be grateful that you are well enough to assist someone else in feeling better. Instead of approaching with anxiety, approach with a humble heart and a feeling of gratitude that you can make a positive difference in another person's life.
Ask for Some Help
If it is your first massage session with a new customer and you are feeling apprehensive, ask a trusted coworker to listen at the door at regular intervals or to check in on you if your massage space uses curtains instead of solid doors. If you are alone, text a friend and let them know when they should hear back from you. This can help you feel safe.
Whether you're brand new or an old pro, anxiety and nervousness can strike anyone. These tips will help you calm down and get your head in the right space to your job with grace and authority.
