You look at the mirror, and there it is. The nightmare blemish stares back and you, and your first impulse is to pick at it because you think it will disappear. Wrong! Picking at blemishes will only cause more aggravation and can lead to other problems. What was once a small pimple can turn into a swollen area on your face, and scarring can also occur. The first step you must take is educate yourself on the side effects of picking skin blemishes. You can find examples of the skin aggravation, swelling, and scarring that can happen as a result. What should you do? Begin a new skin care regime by considering skin care products that target your key problems. Do you have dry, oily, or combination skin? Do you only have break-outs in certain areas? Many products feature skin care quizzes you can take to determine which products will best fit your needs. Stop picking at your skin by making a conscious effort to avoid touching your face. If you cannot feel it, you won't know it's there. Stay away from mirrors, so that you are no longer aware of the blemishes, and when you use the bathroom, do your business without staring into the mirror. You can also dim the lighting in your bathroom, and consider installing yellow lights if you have fluorescent lighting. Change your compulsion to pick. When you have the urge, train yourself to do something else. Do not use magnifying mirrors or extractors, because those items will only increase your urge to pick. At the end of the day, you must have realistic expectations. Your skin will not change overnight, but you can take steps to improve the condition of your skin. Avoid looking at airbrushed photos and longing for better skin, because those photos are not realistic views of people and their skin.
