The cold sauna is a relatively new concept to health and wellness professionals. It was a popular method for treating medical problems back in the 1800s, however lost this popularity with the introduction of the hot sauna. However, this cold body therapy has regained steam since its use in the 2008 Olympics to treat athletes.
These new saunas expose the body to temperatures reaching -110 degrees Celsius. The positive health benefits of this cryotherapy include: boosting immune response, diminish chronic pain, improve mobility, repair nerve damage, and as shown in the Olympics, improve sporting performance. Additionally, subjecting your body to these extreme temperatures can be a huge pick-me-up and has caused the cold sauna to begin showing up in day spas and health clubs. Experts believe this is partly due to the rush of endorphins and adrenaline that you experience when you step into the cold temperatures. Those who have used these types of saunas claim to feel re-energized and that their skin has a noticeable glow that was missing before. Although it may seem a bit extreme to subject your body to such extreme temperatures, those suffering from arthritis, years of chronic pain or limited mobility can reduce these symptoms substantially with this treatment. In order for the effects to last, you may have to visit a cold temperature sauna several times a year, however the benefits far outweigh the 3 minutes of cold you must endure. However, this treatment is still relatively new and only available at select locations throughout the world.
