Massage therapists use knowledge in the healthcare field to provide a multitude of services for clients, and the choice of careers span a broad horizon. Some of the positions therapists work include self-employed businesses, physical therapy, rehabilitation, health clubs, spas, hotels, sports teams, and dance groups. While many work from direct locations, others travel to offices and homes to provide services. Because of this, a massage therapist needs to know a fair amount of information.

Students need some level of knowledge in human anatomy, courses in physical education, fitness, and physical therapy because of the types of massages people seek. Through a vocational school or an apprenticeship, students study massaging techniques. Sport massages, deep tissue massages, shiatsu, and reflexology are all techniques students should learn. They should also learn how to apply pressure to specific parts of the body, use infrared lamps, ice, whirlpool baths, and wet compresses.

Other skill sets massage therapists need to know include the preparing and blending of oils, the assessment of soft tissue condition such as muscle strength, joint quality and function, and range of motion, the explaining of and guidance with stretching and rehabilitative exercises to improve posture, and the development and proposing of treatment plans that detail the types of massages used during treatment.

While learning this, students will need to become comfortable with touching patients and asking them about any concerns they have or pains they are feeling. Therapists consult with healthcare professionals and maintain records to determine the best methods to treat patients, so knowing further information is vital to a client’s health. Along with this, massage therapists may also refer patients to other healthcare professionals, including chiropractors and psychologists, when necessary.
