Anti-Aging Skin Care After Menopause

Like a fine wine, many aspects of us get better with age. Unfortunately, hormone levels do not follow suit. As the body ages, levels of the critical hormone estrogen begin to rapidly decrease, having a big impact on the skin. Estrogen is responsible for elasticity, boosting the production of collagen, and keeping the skin tight, soft, and supple. As estrogen levels decrease, the skin becomes drier, thinner, saggier, and more prone to fine lines and wrinkles. These adverse effects most commonly present above the upper lip or as crow's feet near the eyes.

After menopause, oil glands in the skin decrease their activity. Proper skin care, particularly deep cleansing and hydration, is crucial for anti-aging and combatting the effects of decreased collagen production. Thinner, drier skin requires you to moisturize more consciously. Choose a thick, creamy formula over gels and foams, as the latter can actually further strip away moisture from the face. After cleansing, moisturize using a heavy cream while the skin is still damp, as this helps to improve hydration. This also applies to the rest of the body, namely the back of the hands, which also suffer from dryness and wrinkling after losing moisture, necessary fat, and collagen.

A visit to an esthetician at your local day spa can do wonders for your anti-aging skin care goals. The esthetician will be able to assess the characteristics of your particular skin type and make recommendations for products and treatments that will be most effective. Plus, who doesn't want an excuse for a pampering session?

The trick to healthy skin after menopause doesn't end at the pharmacy or day spa, though. Making mindful choices at the supermarket can have an equally significant impact on the skin. Opt for bright, antioxidant-rich foods to strengthen the skin from the inside out.
