When you applied to massage therapy school, you had stars in your eyes. You dreamed of a career that allowed flexibility while permitting you to provide a service for people. Unfortunately, burnout after massage school is high. Here are eight tips to help you avoid burn out in an industry that is ripe with it.

1. Get Your Own Massage

Trade massages with other therapists. Not only are you on your feet all day, but you are working the muscles in your hands, arms, shoulders, neck, and back on an almost constant basis.

2. Pay Attention to Nutrition

Eating well can help anyone avoid career burn out. Be sure to take the time for at least one healthy, vitamin-packed meal each day. Avoid the urge to eat on the run.

3. Exercise

A regular exercise routine helps you build endurance. The stronger you are, the better massage you are able to give. By building your endurance, you are less likely to become sore and tired by the end of your day.

4. Don’t Give It Away

People in every profession are asked for advice and help from friends and family. Don’t give your massages away. Offering your friends and family a discount is find; providing free services is not.

5. Stay Organized

Disorganization is often the cause for a loss of interest in your career. Keep a calendar, follow up with clients on a specific day or at set times, and use accounting software to keep your books in order.

6. Take a Break

No matter how flexible your schedule, you need to take a break from time to time. Be sure to schedule small breaks into your day, and longer breaks into your year. Don’t be afraid to take a vacation.

7. Educate Yourself

Don’t get stuck in a rut. Attend seminars and continuing education classes. When you are learning, you are less likely to become burnt out.

8. Say No

If you are a people pleaser, saying no can be difficult. Do not push yourself when you need a break or can’t possibly make one more commitment. Put yourself first.
